Eating & Drinking

Eating or ingestion as it was previously known is the process of consuming nutrition (food) in order to provide energy for growth and repair. The process of eating often varies from species to species, however for humans it is a simple process of placing in mouth and digesting it. Many homes now have a kitchen which is a separate room in which food is often prepared and sometimes served. In modern day society there are now many different places where people can go to eat or drink.

Eating and Drinking plays a huge role in society today and is an important pasttime. GatoradeGatoratde

Gatorade is Wakefield Wildcats official Sports Drink supplier.

Wildcats General Manager Francis Stephenson said: 'Not only are we proud and excited to be associated with Gatorade, we are also glad of the benefits gatorade provides to our players. We expect our players to perform to their best and gatorade provides the best'

Gatorade - the most researched sports drink in the world – is now finally available in the UK, which means that competitors at every level and from every sport can reap the benefits of over 40 years of research into sports science. The UK will also be the first country in the world to benefit from a formula which contains no artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners and no preservatives.

Gatorade, the original isotonic sports drink, was created in 1965 after the University of Florida’s American football coach asked the medical department to find a way to stop his team – the Gators - wilting in the Florida heat. The scientists developed a formula to replace the essential mineral salts and fluids being lost through sweat.

Just two years later the team had won their first Orange Bowl due to the huge performance improvement and the team gave the drink their name - Gator-ade. The brand was catapulted into American consciousness when Bobby Dodd, coach of the opposing team and favourites to lift the trophy, was asked why his team lost. He told reporters, "We didn't have Gatorade - that made the difference."

Gatorade is a scientifically proven balance of water, carbohydrates and electrolytes designed to rehydrate, replenish and refuel active bodies. The commitment of the internationally recognised Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), built in 1985, has ensured that the optimal formula has made it the world’s most tested sports drink.

Used by more athletes than any other sports drink in the world, Gatorade’s advocates include Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Maria Sharapova, Frank Lampard and Ronaldinho. Every Gatorade athlete is sweat tested by the GSSI to understand the rate at which they lose fluids and electrolytes, and the unique composition of their sweat, to develop hydration and nutrition strategies to optimise their performance in training and competition.

In the UK, Chelsea FC have used Gatorade since the beginning of the 07/08 season. Rather than the usual commercial-led deals of the Premiership, the partnership was primarily driven by the team’s medical team. Nick Broad, Chelsea FC Nutrition Director, is clear on why Gatorade is the best choice for his players, “It’s been exciting to have the opportunity to work with the GSSI on joint plans for research and team development. Gatorade’s unique history and scientific knowledge mark it out as the clear thought leader in sports nutrition.”

With consumers becoming increasingly health conscious and looking for more natural choices, the UK is the first country to benefit from a unique Gatorade formulation which maintains optimal efficacy yet contains no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners and no preservatives.

Research has shown that when drinking water while exercising, athletes only manage to replenish around fifty per cent of liquids lost through sweat. Gatorade’s two distinctive flavours are formulated with a unique blend of electrolytes and a less sugary taste profile than other sports drinks, which actively encourages exercisers to drink more and stay better hydrated.

Dr Susan Sherriffs from the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences at Loughborough University and head of GSSI UK, says, “Sports drinks are the best way to replace the essential mineral salts and fluids lost during exercise. They aid every competitor whatever their sport, whatever their level - from F1 drivers and Premiership footballers to gym enthusiasts.”

Richard Allen, Ironman and nine times National Elite British Triathlon Champion, says, “Keeping hydrated and energised is key for success in any sport,as the exertion involved in training or competing causes excessive loss of fluids. Gatorade provides exactly the right balance of water, carbohydrates and electrolytes before, during and after exercise.”

In two thirst-quenching flavours - orange or lemon , Gatorade is available at an RRP of £1.09 for a 500ml bottle from all major supermarkets, convenience stores and leading gym chains.
