Musical Instruments

A Musical instrument is a device that has been made with the purpose of making music.  Anything that produces a sound by having an individual to control the sound is classed as a musical instrument.  However, the term musical instrument is used moreguitar for a instrument that has a musical purpose rather than just a sound.

The academic study of musical instruments is called organology.

There are many different types of musical instruments.  They can often be divided up by the way in which they generate sound.

One type of musical instrument is.  Instruments that generate sound from matter in it's solid state.  These instruments include:  Voice- as a singer generates sounds from airflow into the lungs, this sets the voacl cords into osicillation.  The frequency can be controlled by tension that is in the vocal cords and the tone quality by formation of the vocal tract.  A number of different sounds can be created.

String Instruments are another.  String Instruments make sound when the string is either plucked, or strung. The frequency of the wave produced (note produced) is generated by the length of the vibration on the string.  Examples of String Instruments are guitars, eletric guitars, violins and cello.

Percussion Instruments are another different type, they create a sound when they are struck.  The sound produced depends upon where the instrument is struck.  The sound can also depend upon the material and shape of the instrument.

Other types of musical instruments are : Instruments that generate sound from matter in its gaseous state.  These include wind instruments. A column of air is made inside the instrument, this air then vibrates and produces a sound.  The frequency of the wave produced is in relation to the length of the column and the actual shape of the instrument.  The quality of the tone is measured by the construction of the instrument.  Woodwood instruments are included in this, with instruments such as the clarinet, oboe and flute.  Brass Instruments may also include trumpet, french horn and the trombone,
