On Sunday the fans of both Wigan and Wakefield were treated to a number of exhibition games involving amateur sides from Wakefield and Wigan. Teams from Crigglestone; Oulton; Shaw Cross; Hindley; and Shevington ranging from under 8’s to under 10’s all took to the field to show off their talents.
All the games were played in great spirit and there was plenty of support from their loyal bands of supporters. Wigan side Shevington Sharks even brought a coach full of supports to cheer their charges on.
In total nearly 150 kids took part in the pre-match games on the Belle Vue turf. At half time in an additional treat the players of the teams had the opportunity to have a lap of honour with the Wakefield and Wigan fans alike giving them a rapturous round of applause as they made their way round.
In addition to the amateur clubs there was also a touch rugby game between past players of the Wakefield club. Names such as Wandless, Law and Spence took part in the game that saw the match fittingly finish at a 3-all draw.
In the upcoming matches, fans should look out for more amateur club festivals and the Wakefield College Touch tournament will take place.
