Last weekend when the Wildcats played host to St Helens there was a first for rugby league that took place. As part of the pre-match entertainment the under 14′s and under 16′s of North Derbyshire Chargers and Northampton Demons played their final league games of the season as curtain raiser to the main event. This is the first time that a midlands rugby league fixture has been played at a professional ground.
Both fixtures proved to be very close encounters with the first game being decided by the boot, with goal kicking ultimately impacting on the result. Northampton were the victors by 4 points. In the second encounter (under 16′s) the match was decided with the very last play of the game with North Derbyshire Chargers scoring in the dying seconds next to the corner flag.
At half time the Wildcats Community team presented North Derbyshire with a signed and framed shirt. Each Super League club has formed links with summer rugby teams in the aid of development and Derbyshire are the Wildcats link club.
The Community team look forward to hosting further matches from the Chargers and possible opponents and would like to congratulate all the teams involved on Sunday.
