Wakefield Wildcats 30 – 10 Dewsbury Rams
A determined Wildcats side containing eight new players took to the field this afternoon for their pre-season friendly against Dewsbury Rams.
The Wildcats came away with a 30 – 10 victory over the Rams, and a lot of positives to build upon for the upcoming fixtures.
The going was good early on, as Millard recieved a smart pass from Josh Veivers and claimed the first try of the game after just 10 minutes. Another try soon followed 14 minutes later, with Kieron Hyde getting over the line. Carrying on the good run, Frankie Mariano scored his debut try for The Wildcats in the 30th minute. In an attempt to get on the score board before half time, Dewsbury scored a try in the 38th minute which was later disallowed due to an earlier knock on.
After a Wakefield dominated first half, Dewsbury came back fighting from their half-time talk and claimed a lot of possesion. Wakefield were first to score, with Aaron Murphy crossing the white wash after a spectaluar run from the 60 metre line. Dewsbury responded well with a try from Scott Turner in the 50th minute. With an unsucessful conversion, this left the score at 24 – 4.
After two disallowed tries, Dewsbury got their second touchdown in the 70th minute scored by number 23, Luke Menzies. Josh Veivers then added the final points to the match in the 78th minute, followed by a succesful conversion of his own try. The final score was then 30 points to 10.
The match was a hard fought battle throughout, with both sides showing determination and staminar in what were difficult, wet conditions.
The Dewsbury Man of The Match was given to Keegan Hirst, and the Wildcats Man of The Match was given to Chris Dean.
Speaking after the game Wildcats Chief Executive James Elston said, “It is great to be able to play these games between Super League and Championship.”
“We have strong links with Dewsbury Rams, it is a fantastic club and it’s great that some of our younger players will join them on dual registration later this year.”
