Wakefield Wildcats lost out to the Salford City Reds this afternoon at a very wet and muddy Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
Salford were the first to get the points on the scoreboard with a try in the second minute. After a break out of dummy-half from Matty Smith, Ratchford collected the ball and crossed the line, the score stood at 6-0. Another Salford try soon followed, this time from Holdsworth. An unsuccessful conversion left the score at 10-0.
Wildcats responded by applying great pressure from the boot, and forced two goal line dropouts in 5 minutes. However Salford carried on their run and were the next team to add the points. A try from Henry in the 17th minute left the scores at 16-0.
Wakefield responded well with a try 6 minutes later. Lee received a superb offload, the defence parted and he dived under the sticks getting the Wildcats onto the scoreboard. Impressive Josh Veivers added the extras, Wildcats 6, Salford 16. Wildcats put their bodies on the line and defended well to keep Salford out just before half time, entering the dressing rooms at 16 points to 6.
Wakefield Wildcats started the second half the better side, gaining good field position and keeping possession in the oppositions half. Salford hit back and began to sustain solid pressure and crossed the line in the 57th minute with a try from Parker. A successful conversion left the scores at 22-6.
Salford’s sin binning of Ryan Boyle in the 61st minute for a late challenge on Jeremy Smith, boosted The Wildcats, with strong attacking play from all. However, Salford responded with 2 quick tries from Sidlow and Henry. The score board stood at 32-6 at full time.
Despite Wildcats determined efforts, Salford were the team leaving with two points. Under very wet, difficult conditions, both teams played with vigour and spirit and fought hard throughout. The attendance was just short of 7000 and the Man of the Match was given to Aussie skipper Glenn Morrison.
