Ladies play rugby ahead of Varsity 2011 finale

Pontefract NEW College were crowned champions of Varsity 2011 at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Varsity Challenge is an annual day of sports fixtures and events held between NEW College and Wakefield College. Almost five hundred students competed during the day in various sports across one spectacular day of sporting competition before the rugby league finale event that saw a head to head battle of the two talented men’s rugby teams.

Prior to the finale the Wakefield College and New College ladies rugby teams battled it out in a very physical encounter. The girls played a 9-a-side game over the duration of 40minutes and gave the crowd something to cheer about.

New College were first to score after a strong run through the Wakefield defence and continued to use this lead to their advantage to score another four over the duration of the game. Wakefield reacted to this and fought back well in the second half to put three tries past a strong New College.

Both teams played very physical rugby and made it hard for one another to score. Clare Marlow the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Women and Girls Development Officer said, ‘It was fantastic to see the girls play as a curtain raiser ahead of the men’s rugby finale. Both teams represented the women’s game well and will hopefully encourage other women to get involved in the game’.

New College claimed a victory with a final score of 20-12.
