A crowd of over 8000 people turned out at the Rapid Solicitors stadium to cheer on the Wildcats. After a very impressive comeback on Friday night, Wildcat fans were out in force to cheer the boys on.
It was however the Wigan Warriors that led 14.-0 at the interval after scoring three first half tries. The warriors took the lead after just two minutes when a knock on from the Wildcats defence gave Wigan excellent field position; Richards took full advantage by touching down over the line. Richards then missed the conversion, with Wigan leading 4-0.
The Wildcats responded well and put plenty of pressure on the Wigan line, however the Warriors defence stayed strong and managed to hold out Paul King. In a flat first half from both teams, Wigan were the team to score next and extend their lead, with full back Sam Tompkins jinxing in and out of the Wildcats defence to touch down under the sticks. Richards stepped up to convert the score, giving Wigan a 10-0 lead on 31 minutes. The Warriors struck again just before half time as right winger Josh Charnley went over in the corner to extend their lead to 14-0. Richards missed the conversion from the touchline. Wigan took a 14-0 lead into the dressing rooms at the interval.
The Warriors came out for the second half and dominated straight away, they then had an Andy Coley try disallowed by referee Hicks. The Wildcats defence stayed strong and created chances themselves going forward however they were kept out by the Warriors. The deadlock wasn’t broken in the second half until the 61st minute, when Joel Tompkins skipped through the Wakefield tackles to cross the line. His try was converted by Pat Richards to give Wigan a 20 point lead. Wigan then extended their lead further through Sean O’Loughling as he scored under the posts with five minutes left to play, again Richards converted the try. The final score 0-26.
A resilient and well battled performance from a tired looking Wildcats side gave Head Coach John Kear plenty of positives to take away from the game.
