Wildcats fall to Catalan defeat

The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats hosted the Catalan Dragons this afternoon at The Rapid Solicitors Stadium and fell to the French side’s defeat.

In very windy conditions, Greg Johnson was the first to touch down after just four minutes. After using smart footwork to dodge three players, Johnson dived over the line and put the first 4 points on the board. With an unsuccessful conversion the scores stood at 4-0 to the Wakefield side.

Two quick tries from the Dragons soon took them into the lead with the scores left at 10-4 after 17 minutes. Damien Blanch soon put a further 4 points passed his former team and with a successful conversion the visiting side were in the lead by 16 points to 4. The Dragons carried on their impressive try scoring run with another touchdown from Vaccari.

The Wildcats responded well just before the hooter with Hooker Matthew Wildie going over the line. With Josh Veivers adding the extras the scores stood at 10-20 as both teams went in for half time.

Catalans were, again, the team to get the first set of points on the board as the second half began. Damien Blanch got his second of the match and with a successful kick the scores soon stood at 26 points to 10. The Wildcats upped their attacking play and after 7 minutes strong forward Frankie Mariano powered over the line. Veivers added 2 points with the boot leaving the score at 26-16 to the visiting side.

Despite a couple of try saving tackles from Dean, Morton and Greg Johnson, The Dragons hit a run of good form and scored two unanswered tries from Greenshields and Sa respectively. The French side now took the lead by 38 points to 16.

In attempt to close the ever growing gap, the Wildcats displayed some impressive attacking play and after great skill from McCarthy the Wildcats added more points to the board. Josh Vievers kicked his 3rd goal of the game and took the scores to 38-22. With only two minutes to go, Catalan scored the final try of the match (Mounis) and left the full time score at 22-42 to our visitors.

Both teams played with sheer determination and power. After a very physical, tenacious eighty minutes the visiting French side left with the 2 points.
