Head Coach John Kear is confident that his boys can pick up another Super League victory tomorrow when they travel to The Willows to take on the Salford City Reds.
Kear knows too well that the Salford side claimed a comprehensive victory over The Wildcats last time they met in Round 3 at our home turf and is therefore determined to change that this week.
“They had a great win last time and they played very well. I’m sure that they will see the game as a way of posting 2 points but obviously we’ve got certain aspirations as well and one of them is to climb up the table and make sure that we are out of the bottom two.”
“We want to haul one of the teams that started on zero points into the bottom 2 and tomorrow is a great opportunity that will be a step towards that.”
After last weeks defeat to Catalan Dragons at The Rapid Solicitors Stadium the team have been working hard and John is certain that there will be a lot of improvements, “I thought last week was our worst performance of the season, I was very disappointed and it’s clear that we need to drastically improve on that. We’ve worked extremely hard for each other all season and it just wasn’t there last week. We have had to address that for our clash tomorrow and I’m confident that we’ve done that.”
Despite last weeks fixture, John has been very pleased with how his side have performed this year, “Every team suffer inconsistencies, that’s the nature of Super League. But you have to look at our performance indicators and they have been very consistent so far, we had played 14 rounds of Super League and I’ve been happy with 10 of those performances, so if you ask me I think we’ve been pretty consistent.”
“We did let oursleves down last week though, that has been made clear to all, but we are determined to turn that around and put in a solid 80 minutes tomorrow evening.”
John fully understands the capabilities of the Salford side and is aware that the fixture will most certainly be a tough one. He told us, “They’ve got a number of skillful, creative players. We have to go out there and make sure that we defend, work hard and pose questinos with the ball in hand.”
“If we play how we normally play, and how we know we can play, we’ve got a great chance of coming away with a very positive result. With a number of team changes, some due to injury and some through choice, we’ve now got a team for tomorrow that have got a damn good chance of getting a victory.”
Two debutants, Gareth Moore and Jarrad Hickey, will feature in the game and their inclusion is a welcome addition to the squad, “I can’t wait to see these two in action” John added.
“It is difficult for a half back to fit straight in but Gareth has done well in the reserves and I tell you that kid can kick a ball. Our kicking game was deficient last week and I’m sure that Gareth will show a significant team improvement with regard to that aspect.”
“The big man (Hickey) is raring to play and it will be great to see such a strong, dominant forward on the field. Their inclusion will have a knock on effect, it’s their first game and they will bring their enthusiasm and excitement with them to the pitch and that will have a positive effect on the whole team.”
