The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are supporting the Royal Armed Forces Weekend as we invite the 299 Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Sunday.
The ’squaddies’ will be attending the game this weekend and partaking in a whole host of activities throughout the afternoon. The men will be partaking in The Wakefield College Touch Rugby Competition before kick off, having a tug of war at half time, addressing our corporate guests on their experiences in Afghanistan and manning their own stall in the Western Terrace area of the ground.
299 Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers was reformed in Wakefield, West Yorkshire in June 2006 and is the only parachute Engineer Squadron in the Territorial Army. It has detachments at Hull, Wakefield and Gateshead.
The Squadron provides Close Engineer Support to 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault), the dedicated regular army engineer unit of 16 Air Assault Brigade. Typical Engineer tasks include demolitions to blow up bridges or create obstacles, water supply, building bridges, construction tasks and heavy plant operation. Members of the squadron have to pass the Airborne forces parachute selection course before being allowed to continue onto parachute training.
Ten soldiers from the Squadron have recently returned from serving in Afghanistan where unfortunately one soldier stood on an improvised explosive device and lost his left leg above the knee.
If you are looking for a challenge, an opportunity to test your courage, endurance and fitness and want to enhance your career prospects, make contact with their recruiting team and find out more. The unit is also looking to recruit support staff male or female who are willing to become drivers or chefs. People who are already qualified as drivers or chefs are welcome to apply.
To meet the inspirational squaddies and to find out more about them at their stall come down to the game on Sunday at The Rapid Solicitors Stadium. Tickets are available from The Wildcats Superstore or by calling 01924 211611 and cost just £15 if you are a Silver Member.
