Wakefield Wildcats Vs Huddersfield Giants 13-10
Wakefield put their recent blip behind them with a fantastic victory against a high flying Huddersfield putting in a hard working gritty performance.
A Try from Luke George and three penalties from Gareth Moore along with a conversion and a drop goal proved the difference as did a solid defensive unit that will have delighted the home fans.
On a rainy day at The Rapid Solicitors stadium, it was Wakefield who took the initiative when Luke George capitalised on the loose ball after some early Huddersfield possession by making a brilliant serge on the wing to open the scoring in just the fourth minute followed by an excellent conversion by Gareth Moore to give the home side a perfect start.
In a tight opening period, Wakefield started to get more of the ball and were awarded a penalty that Gareth Moore converted from 30 yards to put Wakefield eight up. The opening twenty minutes consisted of a lot of penalties and brutal tackles between both sides.
In dodgy weather conditions, Wakefield were giving a terrific account of themselves against a side joint top with Warrington at the start of play with only points difference separating them. Gareth Moore then scored his third conversion of the game by converting a penalty in similar style to the previous one, from thirty yards out to put Wakefield ten up just under the half hour mark.
Wakefield were on top and looking the more likely to score again and defending as a strong unit at the back forcing Huddersfield into poor decisions when under pressure. Wakefield went into the break having nilled their fierce opponents with a terrific work ethic.
The Wakefield side started the second half just as they ended the first. Within two minutes of the second half, Gareth Moore could have increased the score when he received the ball out wide just yards from the try line but knocked on at the vital moment. Huddersfield were starting to have more of the ball but Wakefield looked confident near their own area and put in some good tackles to frustrate the opponents.
Huddersfield remained patient though and despite Wakefield putting up this strong defence, Lunt scored 15 minutes into the second half after putting their defence under immense pressure which was converted to put them back in the game at 12-6.
Just moments later though, Gareth Moore scored a drop goal to keep the score ticking at 13-6, who himself was having a fantastic game. With now more than one try in it, Huddersfield were not helping themselves with a string of handling errors.
However, they were second in the table for a reason and with just under ten minutes remaining, Huddersfield scored through Cording to set up a tense grandstand finish. An unsuccessful conversion left the scores standing at 13 points to 10 in Wakefield’s favour.
The home side had to withstand a wave of attacking play in the final stages from the Giants but their ruthless defence remained consistent and allowed the Wildcats to leave with a well deserved 2 points. The Final Score was Wakefield 13-10 Huddersfield.
The man of the match was given to Stand Off Gareth Moore on his home debut for his 100% conversion rate.
