The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have boosted their forward pack with the signing of NRL star Steve Southern.
The 29 year old back rower from New South Wales has signed a three year deal with the club that will see him in the Red, White and Blue until 2014 subject to UK Border approval.
Southern joins The Wildcats from Australian club Newcastle Knights, at which he has spent a year. Before becoming a ‘Knight’, the strong forward spent 6 successful years at the North Queensland Cowboys, making his debut in 2004 and playing in the Grand Final in 2005.
Steve, or ‘Bluey’ as he is more commonly known on the field, has a wealth of NRL experience behind him, notching up a total of 129 appearances which will make him a fantastic addition to the Wildcats squad over the next three years. He is well known for his phenomenal work rate, passion for tackling and his no nonsense approach to defence and he is set to be an impressive player for The Wildcats.
Wildcats Chief Executive James Elston can’t wait to see Bluey in action at Wakefield, “Steve is a great addition to our squad for the next three years, his NRL experience will provide a great boost to many of our younger players and his ruthless playing style will be great for our supporters to see.”
“I have heard many great things about Steve’s work ethic and he has been a popular member with both fans and players at every team he has been at, I’m sure he will be a perfect fit at The Wildcats. I look forward to his arrival and seeing him in action for Wakefield.”
Steve added, “I’m really excited about my future at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, with a new owner, new Super League licence and new coach it really is the start of something new and I’m stoked to be a part of that.”
“I have a lot of family in England and I’ve always wanted to get over here and play Super League. I’m really happy that I’m finally doing that for Wakefield and I can’t wait to get out on the field and put in my all as a Wildcat.”
