Leeds Rhinos 64 – 20 Wakefield Wildcats

posted on 3 September 2011

The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats lost out to ‘on form’ Rhinos last night in the penultimate game of the season at Headingley Stadium.

A total of 11 tries for the Leeds side, and four for Wakefield allowed the home team to leave with the two points. The Rhinos opened up the scoring with a touch down from Ryan Hall in the left corner and another shortly after from Ben Jones-Bishop.

Their lead was soon extended with Carl Ablett going over the line from close range taking the score to 18-0 in the home side’s favour. The Wildcats responded well however and began their fight back. In the 20th minute,  Semi Tadulala slipped a delightful short pass into the path of Ryan Tongia and the winger scuttled clear down the left flank to score. An unsuccessful conversion took the scores to 18-4.

The next try came from Leeds’ Danny Maguire in the 25th minute with another Rhinos touch down soon following as Ryan Hall got his second of the night. The half time hooter blew with the score board standing at 28 points to 4.

The second half began with The Wildcats’ new signing, Ali Lauititi, crashing over the line to give Leeds another six points, with Sinfield converting. The Wildcats upped their attacking play and a string of smart moves allowed the visitors to shorten the gap. Quick thinking from Ryan Tongia set Josh Veivers up to score for Wakefield  and just moments later, a beautifully collected kick through by Motu Tony sent the full back flying over the whitewash. After a successful conversion from Gareth Moore the scores now stood at 34-14.

Despite Wakefield’s battle to fight back, three quick tries were to follow from The Rhinos. Danny Buderus, Ryan Hall (hat trick) and Jamie Peacock respectively, all touched down for the home side. A try from Lee Smith, which was to be their final one of the evening, ended the scoring for Leeds at 64 points.

With just moments to go, The Wildcats had the final say of the night with impressive loanee prop forward Kyle Amor powering over the line against his parent club. A successful conversion took the final score to 64 points to 20.
