The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats ‘Celebrated Wakefield’ in style last night!
The highly anticipated end of season event took place last night in a luxury marquee on the pitch at The Rapid Solicitors Stadium and has been described as the ‘biggest end of season event in Super League’ with just short of 600 people in attendance.
The evening celebrated the success of the City and the success of the team with the official first team awards being the highlight of the night. A delicious four course meal, a show stopping performance from Take That tribute band ‘Back For Good and a live set from Wakefield’s Got Talent Winner Leanne Crowther made for a perfect, entertaining evening at the Wildcats.
The awards began with two in house accolades for staff at the club, whose hard work can sometimes go unnoticed. Mr Alan Edwards received the award for ‘Clubman of The Year’ for all his extremely valued voluntary work that he does for the Club’s Learning Zone and Marketing Coordinator Nicola Richards was presented the ‘Employee of The Year Award’ by official recruitment partners m2r, an award that was voted for by her colleagues.
The first team awards took place after dinner had been served. Prop forward Paul Johnson proved to be the man of the moment, collecting two awards for both the Players Player and the Coaches Player. On picking up the two trophies Paul commented, “I’m speechless and so happy to have both these awards.”
“I’d like to thank John and the coaching staff for everything they have done for me this year and also players like Jules, Morro and Korki who have been great role models all season. I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I’m looking forward to working hard next year and being a part of great things at Wakefield.”
“I have so much respect for everyone here and I am really grateful for both these awards.”
Fellow forward Kyle Amor picked up the award for the Members Player of The Year and was delighted with his trophy after an enjoyable year here at The Wildcats. The Rising Star award was presented to Matthew Wildie for his impressive season in Super League and the Eric France Award for Professionalism and Dedication was presented to French hooker Julien Rinaldi for giving 100% in both his on field and off field duties all year.
The prestigious Man of Steel trophy was awarded to, ‘Captain Fantastic’ as described by John Kear, Glenn Morrison. Glenn has been a stand out performer all season and his efforts throughout the club, including the youth development programmes, have been second to none. On accepting the award Glenn thanked all the supporters and gave a special mention to John who he stressed would be greatly missed next season.
Wildcats stalwart Matthew Blaymire was given a special dedication for his services to the club along with Head of Sports Science Colin Sanctuary who is heading to pastures new to take up a position at NRL club Newcastle Knights and Physiotherapist Natasha White who is leaving the Wildcats to become a teacher. Everyone at the Club would like to wish the leavers every success in the future and thank them for their time here at Wakefield.
Head Coach John Kear used the opportunity to say his final farewells to the club and think him for his very enjoyable five years here. As John entered the stage he received a rupture of applause and a standing ovation from every person in the room, something that touched the Head Coach greatly. After watching a video highlighting his time at Wakefield John commented, “I’m sad to be leaving such a great club and I would like to thank everyone involved here who works extremely hard to make the club a success, but I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
“I would like to wish Wakefield all the best and I am very confident that great times lie ahead. I’d like to thank the fans for the unbelievable support I have received, I will always hold this club very close to my heart.”
The abundance of supporters, sponsors, staff members and players that attended have all commented on the huge success of the evening and how much it was enjoyed by all of the guests. ‘Back For Good’ ensured that the dance floor was fit to burst and the excitement for next year has truly began!
Congratulations to all the Wildcats winners.
