Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are delighted to announce the signing of Ben Cockayne on a one-year deal.
The former Hull KR and Featherstone Rovers utility back is the latest player to be announced as part of Head Coach Richard Agar’s new-look squad for 2012 and brings almost five years of Super League experience with him to West Yorkshire.
A crowd favourite during his time at MS3 Craven Park for his never-say-die attitude and committed performances, Cockayne was the Robins’ first choice full-back in their promotion winning year of 2006 and debut Super League season in 2007, but was also employed at both centre and wing in recent seasons with his versatility set to be a valuable asset for the Wildcats.
More recently the 28-year old helped Featherstone to a Championship Grand Final triumph, scoring a try in their 40-4 win over Sheffield Eagles.
Cockayne made 139 appearances for Hull KR, crossing the whitewash on 57 occasions and says he is relishing the opportunity to once again ply his trade in the Super League.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Cockayne, who played amateur rugby as a junior for Normanton Knights.
“Rich has really made a bit of a statement with the players he has signed and the ones the club had already signed. I think the future is looking good for Wakefield and it’s an opportunity for me to come and get back in Super League.
“I’ve not really spoken to Rich about any particular position yet but just like at Hull KR, I’ll do a job wherever I’m needed.
“As long as I’m playing each week consistently and contributing for the team then I’ll be happy.
Cockayne is confident the Wildcats can make a mark on Super League in 2012.
He added: “I think you’ve got to be targeting the top eight. There are a lot of new players and I think if we gel together quickly then we could spring a few surprises.
“But it’s just one step at a time and hopefully we can do well and be consistent.”
Agar was pleased to add more quality and depth to his already strong squad for Super League XVII.
“Ben is a quality rugby league player who will bring a lot of energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the side,” commented Agar.
“His versatility is certainly something that will be beneficial to us as we put the final pieces of the squad together for next year and I’m certain he will be an important part of the team in 2012.
“We’re all aware that Ben has had his off-field issues previously and this deal has been structured accordingly, but everyone is firmly focussed on looking to the future and the qualities he will bring to us on the field.”
Season ticket sales for the eagerly anticipated 2012 campaign continue to sell strongly, with the club extending the fantastic early bird price deadline to December 1st.
Supporters can watch all thirteen regular season games from just £20 for juniors, £80 for concessions and £100 for adults.
