After a five year association with the Wildcats, Greek International Michael Korkidas is now embarking on a new challenge.
The 30-year old prop forward joined Wakefield in 2003 and remained in the red, white and blue until 2006 before returning on loan in 2009. ‘Korki’, as he is known to many, spent the 2010 and 2011 season at the Wildcats and has made a total of 142 appearances in Wakefield colours.
Korkidas has signed a deal at Championship club Keighley Cougars where he will play alongside close friend and former team mate Jason Demetriou.
The strong forward’s powerful runs, shuddering hits and ruthless defence have cemented him as a firm fans favourite over the years. Speaking to the Wildcats website he commented on how much he would miss the loyal support of the Wakefield fans.
“The supporters have been nothing but fantastic during my time with the Wildcats.
“There have been lots of ups and downs over the past few years and the fans have stuck by us through thick and thin. I was welcomed to the club with open arms when I joined and I really would like to thank the supporters for how great they have been.”
Korkidas spoke of many fond memories during his time in the red, white and blue and reminisced over a number of stand-out fixtures.
“When I first came to the Wildcats I was a young bloke of only 22 and the club made me feel completely at home and many good times were to follow.
“My favourite memories have to be the victory against Castleford in the ‘Million Pound Match’ and the 2004 Quarter Final against Hull FC. They are both pretty tough to beat.”
Whilst discussing these good memories, Korkidas admitted that he was very much looking forward to his move to the Cougars; however he will be very sad to leave the Wildcats behind.
“Wakefield has been a massive part of my life. I’ve enjoyed some great times here career wise and this is also where I met my wife Terri.
“I really would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at the Wildcats, I’ve enjoyed every minute.”
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats would like to take this opportunity to thank Korkidas for his efforts during his time at the club and wish him all the best at Keighley and in the future.
This is Wakefield. Together We Are Stronger.
