Centre Vince Mellars believes he and his new teammates can make a mark on Super League in 2012.

The Kiwi was one of the very first to sign up to be part of the new era at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium, and had his first duty as a Wildcat on Tuesday night as he hit the catwalk with Dale Morton, the Wildcats Dolls and Daddy Cool at the Wakefield Express ‘Wakefield’s Next Top Model’ event at Trinity Walk.

Super League defences won’t be rolling out the red carpet like the one he walked down on Tuesday night as he and the rest of the Wildcats squad look to make an impact on the competition.

“I’m really excited, especially being one of the early signings,” said Mellars, after his stint as a model.

“Hearing the new players that are being recruited I’m really looking forward to next year and I’m really happy to be joining a club that is steeped in history.

“I’m coming from the Crusaders where we were fairly young in the Super League.  I’m really looking forward to next season and we’re not here to make up the numbers.  We have a realistic chance of hopefully making a top eight place come the end of the season.

Mellars, who played for New Zealand Warriors, Cronulla Sharks and Sydney Roosters in the NRL before joining Super League, says he is looking forward to working under new Head Coach Richard Agar.

“Yeah, I’m really looking forward to working with him.

“I’ve not met him before but from what I hear through teammates that have been coached by him, and other members of staff that have been under him as well, I think he’s the right man for the job here at Wakefield.”

At 27 there’s still plenty of time left in the rugby league career of Mellars, but after a taste of  the catwalk, does life after rugby signal a career in modelling?!

“I’m not too sure about that, but maybe for Dale!” joked Mellars.

“He was talking it up before we went on.  I was a bit more nervous than him but it was good.”
