WARRIOR JOHN SET TO BECOME A WILDCAT

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have made another significant addition to their squad for Super League XVII with the signing of half-back Isaac John from New Zealand Warriors.

Isaac John will pull on a Wildcats shirt in 2012 subject to a successful visa application

The 22-year old has agreed a three-year deal to play in West Yorkshire and become part of Head Coach Richard Agar’s exciting new-look squad for 2012, subject to a successful visa application.

A product of the Warriors’ development programme, John was part of the Auckland Vulkans side that were runners up in the Reserve Grade grand final in the NRL that Agar was in attendance to witness.

John’s first season in the Junior Warriors came in 2008 where he scored 11 tries in 25 games ahead of being promoted to the Warriors’ full-time squad in 2009.

The first of his nine first grade appearances came against Sydney Roosters alongside rugby league legend Stacey Jones, but he found regular opportunities hard to come by due to a combination of injury and the emergence of Shaun Johnson.

A former Junior Kiwi, John will now get the opportunity to showcase his talents in Super League, and is looking forward to making an impact in the northern hemisphere.

“The team that the club are putting together is looking really strong and I can’t wait to be a part of that,” said John.

“I’ve had limited opportunities at the Warriors so the chance to come and run a team around the field is a big one for me.

“James Elston told me about the club and what they’re heading towards, and he basically sold the club to me.

“I like to think I’m a good communicator on the field so hopefully I can bring some direction and leadership to the team.

“I just want to do my role for the team, play some good footy for Wakefield and hopefully we can make the finals series in the next couple of years.”

Isaac John will look to terrorise Super League defences for the next three years

Agar was delighted to secure the signature of John as he puts the finishing touches to his squad for his first campaign in charge.

“Isaac is a very skilful and talented ball player with great footwork and a good kicking game,” said Agar.

“A couple of untimely injuries and with the talent in front of him, it has been difficult for Isaac to get any sort of sustained run in the Warriors side.

“But having seen him star in the recent Grand Final for the Auckland Vulcans, there’s no doubting the ability he has and I’m very happy that he’ll have the chance to show the rugby league world that in a Wakefield Wildcats shirt.

“He’s a key signing for us.  We have some really good quality across the board now and hopefully we can still add a couple more to the roster before too long.”
