Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have further strengthened their squad for 2012 with the signing of Kyle Wood from Huddersfield Giants on a two-year deal.
The 22-year old half-back returns to the club he first joined as a 17 –year old before heading to Doncaster where he was part of their promotion winning squad in 2008.
From there he linked up with Sheffield Eagles, making 27 appearances ahead of a move back to Super League with the Giants.
Wood found opportunities to impress hard to come by with the form of internationals Kevin Brown, Luke Robinson and former Wildcat Danny Brough, but he continued his rugby league education on loan with Castleford Tigers and Batley Bulldogs.
Now he has the chance to return to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium and make a mark at Super League level under the guidance of Head Coach Richard Agar, who has a track record of developing young English talent during his tenure at Hull FC.
Wood said he was relishing the opportunity to be part of the exciting new era at the Wildcats.
“At Huddersfield they’ve got a lot of good international half-backs and it’s a matter of coming here and trying to get some more game time and a regular first team place as long as I work and train hard,” said Wood.
“Rich (Agar) seems to give young lads a try, gets them out on the field and gives them an opportunity. You only get better with game time.
“I’ve played a couple of games here and there but I’ve found that you get better when you can play consecutive games.
“That’s what I’ve got to aim for. I want to have a good pre-season and hopefully Rich will pick me.
“I know we’re going to have a good squad next year and we can hopefully kick-on towards the play-offs.”
Head Coach Agar says he is looking forward to helping the talented youngster reach his potential.
“Kyle is a player who has been learning his craft from some very talented half-backs at the Giants and he now has the opportunity to use that experience to try and establish himself in Super League,” commented Agar.
“He has also had the chance to get some game time in the Championship and like all the players that we have signed for next year, he joins up with a real hunger to be successful for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
“He’s another piece in the puzzle for next season and I’m excited at what he can bring to the squad.”
The Wildcats can also announce that Tommy Lee has been released by the club. Lee made 25 Super League appearances for the club in 2011, scoring six tries and the Wildcats would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well for his future.
