Wildcats Community Trust Chairman, David Oxley CBE was awarded the Spirit of Rugby League Award at Wednesday’s RLIF International Player of the Year night.
On an evening when Billy Slater was presented with the gong for International Player of the Year, Oxley was a surprised recipient of the award with tributes paid by fellow rugby league greats Harry Jepson, Ray French and Garry Schofield.
A former Chief Executive of the RFL, David is hugely respected throughout rugby league for his work with not only the RFL, but with Sport England and as Chairman of Student Rugby League.
“I was deeply honoured to receive the award,” he admitted.
“It is a very special accolade and one I feel privileged to have been presented from someone like Harry Jepson.
“I’ve worked with some splendid people along the way and to have this recognition out of the blue was fantastic.”
David’s role with the Wildcats Community Trust sees him keep a keen eye on goings on at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium and he says he is “thrilled” that the club will be competing in Super League for the next three years.
“I was thrilled when it was announced that the club had retained its franchise,” he said.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for and faith in Andrew Glover who is learning about rugby league all the time but most importantly of all, he loves Wakefield.
“The club have made some very good signings and there’s also some exciting young players in the squad as well and I think everyone goes into the 2012 season with great optimism.”
Everyone at the Wildcats wish to congratulate David on his much deserved award.
