Australian half-back Tim Smith will join Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on a one-year deal subject to a successful visa application.
The former Wigan Warriors man will return to Super League with the Wildcats and add to new Head Coach Richard Agar’s options at half-back following the signings of Isaac John and Kyle Wood in recent weeks.
Smith, 26, began his professional career at Parramatta Eels and picked up the 2005 Dally M Rookie of the Year award.
After 71 appearances for the Eels, Smith moved to Super League with the Warriors in 2008 ahead of returning to the NRL where he made 19 appearances for Cronulla Sharks, crossing the whitewash on five occasions.
After limited opportunities to impress in 2011 he now returns to the Northern Hemisphere determined to reignite his career.
“I’ve been in England before but I think now is a better time for me to come across and I’m happy to be coming to Wakefield,” said Smith.
“I’ve spoken to Richard about his plans for next year and I’m looking forward to being part of the team.
“I think having played in Super League before will work in my favour because I’ve got an idea of what to expect. My family are also coming over with me this time which I think will make a big difference for me personally.”
Smith, who will be sponsored Imtech G&H Ltd, is one of a number of new recruits from the NRL including Steve Southern, Dean Collis and fellow half-back, Isaac John.
“I played against Isaac this year in the semi-finals of the reserve grade and I’m really hoping that we can strike up a good partnership in the halves,” enthused Smith.
“I know a few other blokes that are coming over as well and I’m excited.
“I just want to play consistently well and do my job for the team. If I can play well then I’ll be happy and, from a team point of view, hopefully we can have a good year and try and make the play-offs.”
“Tim is a very talented player and we’re delighted to have him as part of the squad for 2012,” commented Agar.
“He’s obviously played in Super League before so he knows what it’s all about and he’s coming here wanting to get back playing regularly and playing to his undoubted ability, and I know he is determined to make the most of this move.
“We’ve got new options with Tim, Isaac John and Kyle Wood in the halves and that competition for places can bring the best out of all three which can only be beneficial for us next season.
“It’s a great opportunity for him and we are happy and excited to have his talent and experience in the group.”
