Wakefield Wildcats Community Trust have been working in association with New College Pontefract to deliver touch rugby sessions to post-16 students.

Over 100 young people at New College Pontefract took part in a touch rugby tournament last week

These sessions have been delivered to introduce touch rugby to post-16 students as a means of preventing drop-off rate in participation within this age group and culminated in a touch rugby competition held at the college last week with over 100 young people taking part.

The competition was planned and delivered by students as part of their Community Sports Leaders Award with the support of the Community Trust whilst both West Yorkshire Windows and Sport England have both contributed to the success of the programme which has been running since September.

Wildcats first team squad members Russ Spiers and Matty Wilde were in attendance to present the winners with their trophy as well as Community Development Officers from the Trust helped to ensure a very successful day.

Sustainable activities will continue at New College Pontefract and at other venues in the New Year to ensure that these students have the opportunity to continue to participate in touch rugby.

There are also set to be incentives for students to participate and ensure more people are playing the game.
