Wakefield Wildcats are set to join in the fight against all cancers once again, as they get ready to support the 2012 Race For Life.
Wakefield women are being urged to follow in the Wildcats footsteps and enter Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life which is now open for entries.
Our very own Sarah Elston will be leading the official warm-up for the third year running with the help of Wildcats mascot Daddy Cool and the Wildcat Dolls. The Wildcat Dolls Dance Academy will be wowing the crowds with a performance prior to the race and will, of course, be taking part in the race themselves and raising money for the worthy cause.
Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry ‘it’s all of us versus cancer’ to mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends, encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible. Women and girls of all ages, shapes and sizes are needed to join forces for the event which will take place at Thornes Park, Horbury Road, on Sunday 27th May.
To encourage more girls to take part and raise money, each lady that crosses the line will also receive a free ticket to the Wildcats Ladies Day game against the London Broncos on Sunday 3rd June as an added incentive from the club.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in partnership with Tesco is an amazing women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research into 200 types of cancer – helping men, women and children across the Yorkshire and Humber survive.
Race for Life is non-competitive. Women can choose whether to walk, jog or run the 5k route. Most are able to walk 5k in an hour. All women are welcome, regardless of whether they are taking part on their own or as part of a group.
This year will see the encouragement of male participation to help raise money for the event through the Wildcats ‘Play for Life’ initiative. The new concept will see a touch rugby competition take place before the game at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium against Salford City Reds on Saturday 21st April where men can take part and help add to the fundraising total. Nicola Jones, Cancer Research UK’s Yorkshire and Humber Events Manager, said, “Come on ladies, please enter Race for Life in Wakefield today! We know that many women are worried they won’t be able to complete the course, but it is not about being fast or fit, it’s a celebration of sisterhood and hope.”
Last year 3150 women took part in Race for Life Wakefield and raised a fantastic £166, 100. This year, organisers want 3200 women and girls to put their best foot forward and help raise £170,000 for vital research for a disease that affects 26,700 people in Yorkshire and Humber every year.
Nicola added, “We are very grateful to everyone who took part last year and in the past, but the battle against cancer never stops and for this reason we need everyone to return to the fight in 2012 and bring new recruits with them.”
Wildcats Events Manager Sarah Elston commented, “The Wildcat Dolls and the club as a whole are delighted to be supporting Race For Life for the third year running and I’m certain that we can help make this event bigger and better than ever.
“With the inclusion of encouraging men to get involved with raising money for the cause through our ‘Play for Life’ initiative, I’m confident that we can break the target and help raise as much money as possible for such a worthy cause. I hope to see as many people down there as possible giving it a go!”
