WILDCATS TV: AGAR WANTS MUCH IMPROVED DEFENSIVE EFFORT

posted on 20 April 2012

Wildcats Head Coach Richard Agar is targeting a much better defensive effort from his side when they take on Salford City Reds on Saturday (kick-off: 5.45pm).

Richard Agar is expecting a much improved defensive performance from his side against Salford City Reds.

Trinity have had a dip in form since victory over Catalan Dragons and four defeats has seen the Wildcats ship 30 points in each of those losses, a stark contrast to the early season form where the Wildcats were in all of their games for long periods.

And Agar has spent the week reminding his men of the traits that saw some encouraging displays earlier in the season, if not always reaping the rewards of two points.

“Winning ways will only come with the performance,” said Agar.

“It’s a really important game for us in front of our own fans and on the back of our most disappointing period of the season.

“It’s something we’ve addressed with the players this week and looked for a couple of reasons perhaps.

“But most importantly looked at what it’s going to take to fix it up.  We’ve given the players a narrow focus this week on the areas of our team performance that we need to improve.

“Pretty simply we’re missing too many tackles at the moment.

“Hopefully we can turn around some of our defensive efforts and give ourselves a bit more of a chance in the game.

“In the last three or four performances, Wigan apart, our defence has been way down on where it needs to be.

“I think it’s a reminder of when we’ve had some successes this year, what we’ve done really well.

“Not just a reminder but showing the players that.  Having a look at some of the reasons why and where it’s gone wrong over the last two or three weeks.

“We’ve kept out practices this week around that and hopefully we’ll see enough of an improvement so we can have a decent crack with the ball.”
