UNDER 20′S MAINTAIN PLAY-OFF PUSH

posted on 24 July 2012

Glenn Morrison’s under 20’s outfit made it back-to-back victories by beating Huddersfield 50-6 and completing the double over their West Yorkshire rivals.

Lucas Walshaw was a try scorer for the under 20's as they continued their pursuit of a play-off place.

The visitors went into last Saturday’s game knowing the two points up for grabs were crucial ones leading into the remaining five fixtures of the season with Trinity on the verge of the play-offs.

The Wildcats fielded an experienced team with the likes of Isaac John, Matt James, Frankie Mariano and Lucas Walshaw all in the starting 13. Wakefield got off to the perfect start when Liam Kay went over after a powering run from Tom Lillycrop led to John finding Kay to score which was the beginning of a one sided affair at Laund Hill.

Lillycrop continued to torment the Giants defence and another stampeding run helped to set up fellow prop Matt James who grabbed his first of two scores to make it 10-0 after 16 minutes.

Loose forward Chris Annakin then got in on the scoring act before James got on the back of some skilful play by half-back John to give him an eight point haul for the afternoon. The first half scoring wasn’t completed there though as second-rower Walshaw powered his way over on the stroke of half time, in response to Huddersfield’s only try of the game courtesy of centre Joe Fox.

Despite entering the break leading 28-6, Wakefield still came out wanting to improve the look of the scoreboard and both John and full-back Jordan Grayston linked up to set Nathan Flanagan to score in the 58th minute before three tries in seven minutes completed the hammering.

Substitute Danny Cowling went over in the 67th minute before the ever improving winger Sam Fletcher scored with influential hooker Ryan Wright scooting over untouched from dummy-half.

The victory leaves the Wildcats in 7th position in the Valvoline Cup, level on points with 6th place St Helens.   The youngsters next challenge comes in the way of 2nd place Leeds Rhinos this Saturday at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

Entry is free to all members and just £3 for adults and £1 for juniors/concessions who are not members.

Wakefield Wildcats: Grayston; Morton, Kay, Hardcastle, Fletcher; John, Ansell; James, Wright, Lillycrop, Walshaw, Mariano, Annakin. Subs: Slater, Cowling, Gledhill, Flanagan.
