Fresh from winning this week’s £250 Club 1873 jackpot Wildcats winger Ben Cockayne has urged supporters to get behind the clubs lottery while admitting it is nice to be back amongst the squad for pre-season training.
Wakefield’s 2012 top try scorer returned to training last Wednesday and was surprised to receive the news he had won the jackpot which has made his preparations for next season all the easier. The former Hull KR man scored 16 tries in his first year in the red, white and blue and featured in 28 games.
Cockayne himself admits it’s been a difficult reintroduction to training. “It’s been pretty tough, I’ve missed a couple of days because of a slight groin injury but it’s all good, nice to meet one or two new faces too,” said the outside back.
“It’s always nice to see all the boys. I obviously saw a few of them in the off season anyway and caught up with a few of them but it is nice to be back and see everybody smiling.
“Reece is there to push for a wing spot this season so I don’t think anything is to be taken for granted, especially from mine and Peter Fox’s point of view so it should be interesting.
“You need competition throughout your team if you want a successful season. You do need competition in all areas and we’re beginning to get that now so it’s all good.”
The 29-year-old spent two weeks in Asia in his off-season but even though Trinity’s last game was September 15th he explains the squad have all been keeping fit throughout their break.
“I had a great off season. I went to Thailand for a couple of weeks and come back with a couple of steady weeks training by myself and got back here and we started getting flogged.
“I’ve been doing bits and pieces to keep fit before we came back. Clogger (Martin Clawson, Strength and Conditioner) gave us all individual training programmes so it was nice to get a rest but all the same we all kept on top of our fitness.
“Everybody is glad to be back with smiles on our faces apart from when we are getting flogged to within an inch of our lives but other than that everybody is pleased to be back.
“Clogger actually told us we’re in a lot better condition than what we were last year so we must all be in reasonable shape.”
Meanwhile, Cockayne was the first player to win the weekly cash prize of £250 after the majority of the first team squad signed up to the initiative last season. It costs just £2 a week to join and this week’s winner was delighted to find out his four lucky numbers had been selected.
“It did come as a surprise. I got a tweet off Club 1873 telling me I’d won and I’m over the moon with it, I pay just like anybody else so I’m going to shove that cheque in my pocket.
“Most of the boys are in it and it’s a great thing to get involved with because we’re supporting the club and it goes to the youth development system which is great and to get the win is a bonus.
“You have to build from the bottom and this organisation is giving the youngsters the best possible education as far as rugby league is concerned so it’s only going to benefit the club in the long run.”
On top of the cash draws every Sunday a number of different winners are selected at random throughout the week in the daily draws which include vouchers for Kashmiri Aroma, the Wildcats club shop, Angelic Beauty Therapy and many more.
Monthly spot prizes are picked out every month where a first team player comes to your front door to present the prize with three being won this month after missing September and October due to the players off-season break.
That, along with a £2,000 mega draw to be won before Christmas, there is no better time to sign up to Club 1873.
