Former Wildcats coach John Kear’s autobiography Coaching is Chaos has been published this week and copies will be available from the clubs retail stores.
Kear began his rugby career as a player and assistant-coach at Castleford before taking charge of his first club, Bramley, in the late 1980s.
After a spell at the RFL he returned to club coaching with Sheffield Eagles, guiding them to victory over Wigan in the 1998 Challenge Cup final.
Kear coached the merged Huddersfield-Sheffield club and had a spell in rugby union before stints as assistant at Wigan Warriors and Hull.
He became head coach at Hull and guided them to the Challenge Cup in 2005 before being sacked the following year.
When he took charge of Wildcats in July 2006 the team were sitting bottom of Super League – with just six games of the season remaining – and seemed doomed to relegation.
Wins over Castleford and Catalan Dragons in his first two games gave them hope, but after losing to Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, Wildcats went into their final two games of the year knowing another defeat would see them relegated.
An epic win at Bradford Bulls set up a last-match relegation decider at home to Tigers, which Wildcats won to send their arch rivals down.
After leaving Wakefield last year Kear – who coached England in the 2000 World Cup – has been at the helm of Co-op Championship outfit Batley Bulldogs.
In Coaching is Chaos Kear reveals the full story behind Wildcats’ great escape and his time at Rapid Solicitors Stadium, along with the ups and downs of his career from schoolboy scoreboard operator at Castleford to coach of England.
He also outlines some radical views on the future of the game and many of the players he played with and coached.
Coaching his Chaos is published by Scratching Shed and is available now, priced £14.99 at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium Box Office, the Ridings Centre store or our new Trinity Walk outlet.
