Wildcats skipper Danny Kirmond has praised the Wildcats defensive display in the 30-12 victory over the Catalan Dragons on Saturday evening.
Kirmond highlighted the defence as the most pleasing part of Wakefield’s second home league victory of the season and believes the performance was a real team effort.
“We’re all really pleased,” he said after the game.
“Everyone’s played their part and that has been the difference today. We’ve been able to win the battle in the middle which was always really going to be important in this game. For me the defensive display we’ve put on today is what’s really pleasing.
“We’ve got a really good attacking team and we know the defence is what needs to be improved so to defend like that today is really pleasing.”
Kirmond was part of a right edge that excelled against the Dragons, with Dean Collis and Peter Fox both putting in excellent displays for the Wakefield cause.
The skipper was full of praise for fellow teammate Fox whose two tries played a vital part in the Wildcats victory.
“I think Foxy changed the game, finished his chances when him and Deano broke and he also got back and made a try saving tackle at a point where they could have got back into the game.”
“I think Pete doesn’t always get the credit he deserves for the amount of tries he gets and he works really hard for the team. He takes some really tough carries in some really tough areas of the field and it’s nice to see he’s getting a few plaudits today.”
Kirmond ran in for a brace of tries himself as his form continues to improve after a stop-start early part of the season. His contribution was one of many positives to come from the Wildcats showing but he was modest in taking praise.
“It’s nice to score two today against an excellent attacking team like Catalan but it’s all about playing well as a team and the performance today is really pleasing in that aspect.”
