School children from across Wakefield have been putting their skills to the test in a tag rugby festival at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium last week.

Around 200 school children took part in the tag rugby festival last week at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

Altogether 11 schools took part yesterday each having one boys and one girls team and it proved to be a brilliant day in the glorious sunshine.

The schools that took part were: The Mount, Greenhill, Newlands, Normanton Common X, Normanton Common Z, Lawfield, Dane Royd, Sandal Endowned, Sandal Magna and St Michaels X and St Michaels Z.

St. Michael’s were victorious in the girls competition whilst The Mount boys came out on top in the boys.

Having had six weeks of coaching throughout the year, the new skills that the year five and six pupils had developed was very evident with some superb rugby on show.

Community development officer Dan Hardy said: “It has been a great success. The children have been brilliant and have really listened to our advice, it made for a fantastic day.

“It has been a superb year for the Wildcats community team and we are always looking at new ways to get school children involved in the city’s only professional sports club.”

All schools have been invited to enjoy this Friday’s visit of Champions Leeds Rhinos game on the 26th July to parade around pitch giving fans the chance to show their support.

Tickets for the game are on sale now and with a big derby day crowd expected, fans are advised to purchase in advance to avoid disappointment.  Buy by visiting the Wildcats retail store at the Ridings Centre, the Rapid Solicitors Stadium Box Office or online.
