Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have made their first signing for 2014 by agreeing a two-year deal for prop Daniel Smith.
The 20-year old former England Academy international has spent the last year in Australia, making 24 appearances for South Sydney Rabbitohs under 20’s side having previously been a member of the Leeds Rhinos Academy.
Standing at 6ft 3in tall and weighing in at almost 17 stone, Smith will be joining a squad containing former England Academy teammates Reece Lyne and Bobbie Goulding.
The former Lock Lane amateur and Castleford High School student is hungry to make the most of the opportunity to establish himself in Super League.
“I’m really excited. It’s a big opportunity for me and I’m going to grab it with both hands.
“I spoke to Richard (Agar) and he said there would be a big opportunity here and that’s what I want.”
Smith landed back home in England on Thursday afternoon and now looks ahead to pre-season training getting underway in the next few weeks. The prop says he is looking forward to running out at a club much closer to his hometown of Pontefract.
“It’s not gone down too well with my mates,” he joked.
“Australia was the best experience of my life. It’s changed me massively on and off the field. Mostly off the field and I’ve turned into a man, as they say. Australia’s a great country and I loved it out there.
“I’m really looking forward to ripping in and getting a Wakefield jersey on. I’m just looking to try and establish myself over here and do my best for Wakefield.”
