Trinity’s under 19′s Academy got 2014 off to a winning start with an impressive 22-20 win over Championship 1 outfit Hemel Stags.
The match, played over three thirty minute periods, saw Stuart Dickens use 23 players including a large number of the 2013 under 16′s squad who have stepped up an age group following last year’s unbeaten campaign.
Despite coming up against a Hemel Stags side packed with a number of open age players, Wakefield’s youngsters more than held their own and came from 20-10 down to claim victory with Jack Teanby, Luke Powell, Brandon Conway (2) and Declan Brereton crossing the whitewash. Tom Megretton kicked a solitary goal to ensure a successful first outing.
Dickens commented after the game: “We can take loads of positives from this game but it also gives me a headache for selections because everyone played really well.
“Our defence on our own line was very good and in the final third of the game some of our attack was brilliant.
“Our boys are fresh out of school and physically this was a massive challenge for them and they held up well.”
