BRONCOS 22-50 WILDCATS

posted on 16 March 2014

For the second time in a week Wakefield notched up a half century with full-back Richard Matters grabbing four tries and Jarrod Sammut contributing seven goals and a try in a comprehensive victory over London Broncos at The Hive.

Richard Mathers scored four tries in the capital.

Wakefield opened the scoring after six minutes following a smart move down the right. Dean Collis made a break down the touchline and as the defence closed in put in a neat kick inside which Richie Mathers gathered to touchdown.

Jarrod Sammut converted and on their very next set the Wildcats doubled their score. Once again they attacked down the right flank with an inside pass sending Mathers to the posts, Sammut making it 12-0 with the conversion.

Prop Scott Anderson made his presence felt with some strong runs for Wakefield and a 40 -20 from Paul McShane gave them another good attacking position. This time they couldn’t capitalise and the Broncos gradually came more into the game.

Midway through the half Denny Solomona was tackled into touch by the corner flag on their first real attack, although a searing break by Sammut down the middle almost brought the visitors another score, Ali Lauitiiti just failing to finish things off.

Just minutes later the Broncos opened their account when Solomona charged down the left and chipped inside, which caught the Wakefield defence on the hop. Scott Moore eventually snapped up the loose ball which was fed out to Thomas Minns who cut inside to score by the posts.

Josh Drinkwater made no mistake with the conversion but just when the home side thought they were back in the game the Wildcats struck again. Sammut seized on a loose pass to sprint 40 metres to the line and his conversion restored their 12-point advantage.

They increased their lead when another attack down the right saw Danny Kirmond and Sammut combine to put Dean Collis over and just before half-time a trademark offload from Lauitiiti enabled Reece Lyne touchdown. Sammut converted both for a 30-6 lead.

Wakefield struck first in the second half, Mathers grabbing his hat-trick following a strong run down the middle. The Broncos eventually hit back when a penalty gave them good field position, Ben Farrar and Drinkwater combining to put Solomona over by the corner flag. Drinkwater converted magnificently from the touchline but going into the final quarter Collis grabbed his second, Sammut’s conversion making it 40-12.

Solomona sealed a fine performance with his second try of the afternoon but Pita Godinet then went in under the posts for the Wildcats to present Sammut with a simple conversion. Matt Cook got one back from the home side which Drinkwater converted but Wakefield had the final say when Mathers wrapped things up with his fourth try of the game.
