Students from the Yorkshire Sport & Education Academy joined their counterparts from Bradford and Wigan for a touch rugby tournament on Wednesday.

The Yorkshire Sport & Education Academy students at Wigan last week.

The BTEC Sport students travelled to Wigan to take part in the round robin event with two teams from the Warriors and one from the Bulls.

All three clubs are running the Level 3 BTEC course in association with Learn Direct and RL Cares, providing qualifications and experience that will help the students on their path towards a job in professional sport.

The day was a reward for the hard work of the year so far and also gave the students the chance to see fully qualified touch rugby referee’s in action as they themselves work towards their own refereeing qualification.

Another aspect of the course sees the young people taking their level 1 rugby league coaching course that will enable them to deliver sessions in primary schools and Sports & Education Officer, Darren Rogers, believes last Wednesday was a big benefit to the pupils.

“This wasn’t an assessed piece of work or anything of that nature, but more a reward for all the students for the hard work they put in and a chance for them to enjoy themselves with other students taking the same course,” said Darren.

“It was beneficial as a rewarding day out but also to see touch rugby referee’s in action as they work towards that qualification and interacting with new people is good for their personal development in terms of growing in confidence. When going into a new environment such as a primary school you need to be a confident communicator to deliver a session and the more experience of interacting with other people makes that so much easier.”

The Level 3 BTEC course is enrolling now for 16-18 year olds looking to get ahead of the rest when pursuing their dream career working in professional sport.

As well as providing a qualification equivalent to three A Levels that can help get young people into University, the Yorkshire Sport & Education Academy can also provide priceless hours of work experience from a base at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
