Richard Mathers believes next weekend’s Tetley’s Challenge Cup tie has all the makings of a fantastic encounter.
Mathers is a two-time Challenge Cup winner during his time at Warrington Wolves and was part of a losing squad in a final whilst at fourth round opponents Leeds Rhinos.
It has been a piece of silverware that has eluded the Rhinos during a trophy-laden spell during the last decade and Brian McDermott’s side will be one of the competition favourites again in 2014.
The tie is one of five all Super League encounters at the fourth round stage and Mathers believe that adds even more hunger to succeed given the number of top flight clubs that will be missing from the fifth round draw.
“I’ve got some fantastic memories of playing in the Challenge Cup and I’ve been fortunate enough to win two so I can really understand what it can mean to a club and a group of lads,” said Mathers.
“I don’t say this lightly, but if I could win it with another group of lads then I wouldn’t want to win it with any other group than this group.
“There’s some characters and certainly some players that deserve to play on that stage. Conversely, if you look at Leeds, none of them have won it together so I can see why from their point of view it’s at the top of their priority list. It’s going to be a fantastic game.
“There’s a lot to play for across the draw. It’s uncanny that there’s a lot of Super League teams drawn together. If you get through this round and you look at the draw, it’s not an unrealistic chance of getting there for whoever you are.
“Within the players in the game it sparks a lot of enthusiasm and there’s a massive emphasis that if you’re playing another Super League side in this draw, if you can get through this round, there’s a fair chance you can go on a good run for it.”
Tickets for the game are now on general sale priced at £20 for adults and £12 for juniors/concessions. Tickets can be bought from the Rapid Solicitors Stadium Box Office, the Ridings Centre Store or by calling 01924 211611/201548.
