DISTANCE NO DETERRENT FOR DERRICK

posted on 25 September 2014

Some Wildcats fans can see the Rapid Solicitors Stadium from their house. For some, a match day is a short walk or bus ride. But for Derrick Charlton, his journey to support his beloved Trinity is a lot, lot further.

84-year old Derrick used to be one of those who lives just a stone’s throw from the famous old ground when he resided on Birch Street in Belle Vue but now he travels to every home game from his home near Edinburgh.

Derrick makes the four-hour journey in his motor home to a site in Malton where he is picked up by the friends who he heads to the ground with to cheer on the Wildcats.

He attended Trinity matches from a young age as well as taking part in curtain raisers, buying his first season ticket from a certain Mrs Coetzer and sites the ‘Watersplash Final’ as his most memorable rugby league game.

“It had everything,” said Derrick, “the highs and lows - it’s the most memorable game in my time of watching Wakefield.”

Derrick made the round trip of over 400 miles to be at the launch of David Hinchliffe’s book on that famous afternoon at Wembley and does the same for each home game.

Derrick first came to watch Trinity in the 1940's with friends from Thornes Youth Club before being called up for national service.

He then married late wife Audrey and attended games with children Gail and Wayne and unsurprisingly says the game has changed 'an awful lot' in close to seven decades watching rugby league.

“I love the camaraderie of being among people at the ground. My son can’t understand why I do it but I just love it and will do it as long as I can.

“I always try to think a good thought and be positive," said Derrick, who had a 2014 season ticket in the east stand.

"There’s plenty of people who moan and even when we were 30-0 down at half-time to Hull KR I said, ‘well it can only get better!’

"I'm feeling positive that we can have a good year in 2015."
