A large project was completed last Friday when the club announced our heritage numbers at a dinner in the newly opened Legends Suite.
Club historian, Lee Robinson, has been working on the project with years of research which has included many hours in the local library, time at the rugby league archives at Huddersfield University and hours delving through years of Trinity's past programmes.
He came up with 1,346 names of past players that have worn the Trinity first team jersey since 1895. After the initial fifteen players made their rugby league debuts for Trinity on 7th September 1895, including full back, Harry Kershaw who took the number one position, each new debutant has been given the next number over the following one hundred and nineteen years, culminating in Max Jowitt receiving the most recent number of 1,346 after his August 2014 debut at St.Helens.
Trialists have not been included as their names were not often known and invariably played just one game in the early years, before disappearing back to their amateur or rugby union clubs.
Notable numbers include Hall of Famers, Jonathan Parkin (207), Harry Wilkinson (357), Mick Exley (352), Neil Fox (629), Harold Poynton (643), Derek Turner (654), Ian Brooke (677) and David Topliss (746). Fox, Poynton and Brooke were in the audience at last Friday's Community Trust dinner as well as first team captain, Danny Kirmond, coach, James Webster, Max Jowitt and Martin Clawson, whose father, Terry, was the club's oldest ever debutant at 38 years old in 1978.
