SALFORD RED DEVILS 10-36 WAKEFIELD WILDCATS

A tone for the game was set in the first minute when Remy Grierson carried strongly after Wakefield defended a strong attacking first set.

Will Dagger’s spiral bomb confused the Salford defence. Wakefield continued to press but Salford responded by defending strongly in the centre of the pitch. On the ninth minute, Matty Woodward, broke through two would be tackles and raced 45 metres to score, Will Oakes missed the conversion.

After the re-start, Salford attacked Wakefield’s left hand side but strong defence from Will Oakes and Will Dagger snuffed out the Salford threat, from a resulting Wakefield scrum on half way a planned move saw Will Oakes sprint 30 metres, but was brought down short of the line by a cover tackle from Salford centre.

The balance of the game swung in Salford’s favour with strong forward contact but were prevented from scoring by a spectacular one on one tackle by Kallum Wooffitt.

On the 22nd minute Wooffitt broke through a weak and outpaced the covering defence to score from 45 metres out, Will Oakes missed the conversion.

28 minutes in, good ruck plays and combinations from Salford’s Tom Derbyshire put Harry Maiders into score for the home side. The extras were added by the right foot of Harry McDonald.

On the 35th minute a clever kick by Will Dagger was caught by Matty Woodward. Dagger then recognised space on the short side and stopped Owen to score. The conversion was unsuccessful leaving the half time score at 14-6 to the Wildcats.

The second half began with a Salford knock on from Salfords scrum half. From the scrum, Callum Wheeler beat several defenders to score, Will Oakes converted to increase the lead to 20-6.

A period of scrapping play, Wakefield were penalised for holding down, with Jack Hayden unlucky to concede.

In the 55th minute a high bomb confused the Salford full back and winger. The ball fell kindly to the chasing Matty Woodward who reacted first to score. This left the score at 24-6, Will Oakes slotted over the conversion from just inside the touchline.

On the 63rd minute attacking break from the scrum allowed Will Dagger to run cross field to deliver a quality pass to Clayton Lynch who from the defence putting in Joe Crosland over. Josh Pinder missed the conversion.

On the 69th minute an attacking cross field kick was gathered by Salford’s finished strongly to score, the conversion was missed.

In the final minute a sweeping left to right play enabled Joe Crosland to get on the outside of his opposite number and with an arching run, outpaced the defence to score, Will Oakes converted making the final score 36-10.
