THANKS FOR THE MOST SUCCESSFUL MAGIC WEEKEND

posted on 1 June 2015

Super League Chief Executive Nigel Wood has issued a special ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make Magic Weekend 2015 the most successful in the event’s history.

A total of 67,788 fans packed into St James’ Park for the two-day sporting spectacular that saw a full round of First Utility Super League fixtures played at the home of Newcastle United on Saturday and Sunday.

That figure included a record 40,871 on Saturday, when some of Rugby League’s biggest stars sparkled in three memorable matches played in bright sunshine throughout the day.

And today (Sunday), 26,917 fans were treated to another three great contests as the sun once again shone on Rugby League’s feast of action in the North East.

The total weekend attendance of 67,788 is also an all-time Magic Weekend record, surpassing the previous best of 64,552 set at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester, last year.

“Magic Weekend 2015 has been a terrific success and I would like to thank everyone involved for the part they played in a weekend that will live long in the memory,” said Nigel Wood.

“All the competing clubs deserve praise for the way in which they have continued to embrace a concept which is unique in British sport: not all of them came away from Newcastle with the result they wanted but their contribution to the success of Magic Weekend has been outstanding.

“Thanks also go to all the Rugby League fans who helped create the carnival atmosphere that makes Magic Weekend so special: their passion and enthusiasm for the sport is both invigorating and infectious.

“I would also like to add my personal thanks to people of Newcastle and the North East region who purchased tickets for Magic Weekend in their thousands and will have been spellbound by the event.

“Credit should also go to all the partners, sponsors and agencies whose hard work and commitment ensured that Rugby League fans were given such a warm welcome at St James’ Park and in and around the city of Newcastle.”

The results from Magic Weekend 2015 were:

Saturday
Widnes Vikings 38, Salford Red Devils 16
Hull FC 46, Hull Kingston Rovers 20
Wigan Warriors 27, Leeds Rhinos 12

Sunday
Catalans Dragons 22, Huddersfield Giants 22
St Helens 20, Warrington Wolves 16
Castleford Tigers 56, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 16

A decision on the venue for future Magic Weekends will be made following the routine review of this year’s event. That review will take place over the next few months.
