Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have secured the signing of Michael Sio.

The 22-year-old has joined the club on an 18-month contract from Mackay Cutters, which will see him at Wakefield until the end of 2016.

Sio who was born in Auckland, started his career as a junior at Marist Saints before being signed by the New Zealand Warriors. He then signed with Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup for the 2015 season.

The New Zealander has also represented Samoa, playing alongside Wakefield Wildcats’ Pita Godinet. He was first called up to the Samoan side in 2013 when he replaced Masada Iosefa, and twice in 2014 in the Pacific Rugby League International and the 2014 Four Nations Series facing England in the opening game.

Sio has expressed his delight on joining Wakefield, “It has always been a dream of mine to play in the Super League, a number of the Samoan boys are playing in the UK and they all speak so highly of the competition.

“To be given the opportunity to join Wakefield and play under Brian Smith a legend of the game, there was never any doubt as to if I would go. I know we have a fight on our hands but I can’t wait to get over there and dig in with the team and get the results we need.”

Chairman, Michael Carter is pleased with the signing of Sio saying, “I am delighted to welcome Michael to the club. He is a young guy who can play a variety of positions for us, and I am looking forward to watching him helping our cause for the next 18 months.”
