Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have secured the signing of Anthony Tupou on a two- year deal.
The Australian international has signed a two-year deal at the club which will see him make the move from NRL side Cronulla Sharks to the Super League.
Tupou started his professional playing career aged 20 at Sydney Roosters in 2004 against the South Sydney Rabbitoh’s. He spent four years at the Roosters before signing a deal at Cronulla Sharks in 2009.
The 31-year old who can play as a second-rower and prop has represented Australia in 2006 when he was called up to replace Reni Maitua. Tupou was then called up to the Australian training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup to replace the injured Michael Crocker.
Tupou has spoken about his move saying. “The decision to leave home wasn’t easy for me, but the opportunity to be a part of a club that is changing and building is really exciting to me.
“Playing in Super League is something I always knew I would do one day if I had the chance. The style of league here is refreshing and the unpredictability is what I love the most about it.
“I have made my choice to bring my family to commit and give it my all to Wakefield and the red, white and blue jersey. We have a big challenge ahead and it really would be good for us if more of the fans became members and show we’re all in this change together. I honestly cannot wait.”
Brian said, “Anthony Tupou has chosen to join the Wildcats in what must be one of the club’s biggest moments for foreign imports. “Toops” has a tremendous representative record with Australia and NSW Blues as well as an NRL record with the Roosters and Sharks. His leadership and great attacking talents are sure to light up the 2016 Super League and Wakefield.”
