Following the Summer Holidays and half term, the Wildcats’ Community Team is back in full swing delivering the Sky Try Rugby League Coaching Programme in local schools.

The Sky Try programme has four specific targets. The first being the ‘Sky Try Primary Rugby League’, which focuses on delivering coaching sessions within a cluster of Primary schools and targeting community clubs for 8-9 year olds.

Then we have the ‘Sky Try local school competition and player development’. This is aimed at increasing opportunities at local secondary schools with the focus for boys in years seven and nine to play Rugby League, either for the first time or more regularly.

Then there is the ‘Sky Try play touch’; it is a six week touch rugby workout project aimed at increasing the number of girls participating in the sport at key stage 3.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Lead Community Officer, James Stephenson has spoken about the programme saying, “It is paramount that we are visible around the schools of the Wakefield District offering our services to all.

“The Sky Try Programme was a huge success last season, we engaged with thousands of children in Wakefield who were at some stage in the year invited to the stadium to be part of the match day experience.”

The children had the fantastic opportunity to take part in pre match build ups throughout the season competing in short touch rugby games on the pitch at Belle Vue. This falls under the final part of the Sky Try programme, ‘Making the games bigger’.

James Stephenson continued, “This year you will see us more proactive with our local amateur rugby clubs and community clubs.” (Further announcement are to follow)

“It is a very exciting time to be involved with the Wildcats, the buzz around the club is fantastic and we want to be able to share this with everybody that we meet. The next generation of Wildcats’ supports are very important to us all. We cannot wait to see as many of these kids attending games this season!”
