Wakefield head coach Brian Smith is in the running for coach of the year at the Yorkshire Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
The Australian makes the list after taking the Wildcats from rock bottom of the Super League and a run of 12 straight defeats to safety.
Under Smith’s guidance, the Wildcats overhauled their squad, brought in nine new players and ultimately avoided relegation at the third attempt.
One of those recruits – hooker Scott Moore – grabbed the winning try in the dramatic ‘Million Pound Game’ against West Yorkshire rivals Bradford in October.
Smith joins fellow Rugby League head coach Leeds Rhinos’ Brian McDermott on the list as well as the likes of Yorkshire’s Jason Gillespie and athletics coach Toni Minichiello.
The awards, run by Radio and TV Yorkshire, is in its second year after Aikido world champion Laura Beardsmore took the inaugural prize in 2014.
