A LATE TRY SECURES VICTORY FOR WILDCATS

A late try secured a win for the Wildcats over Championship side Featherstone Rovers.

It was a close encounter over the course of the 80 minutes with the home side on top with five minutes remaining but a late try from youngster Max Jowitt sealed the win for the visitors and a second victory in a row for the Wildcats.

Featherstone were the stronger side in the opening 10 minutes of the game pushing the Wakefield defence deep into their own half. The first try came from Rovers after John Davies scrambled through the wildcats defence to slot it down just wide of the post to put them 4-0 after a failed conversion by Anthony Thackray.

The visitors soon got back into the game when Gibson found an opening on the right side to find Jordan Tansey who had the open field in front of him, converting his own try, Tansey but the Wildcats into the lead on 4-6.

However with 15 minutes remaining of the first half, Featherstone got three consecutive tries, the first came when Johnstone lost possession and a Rovers scrum was given. Ian Hardman then sneaked over dummy half to put his side back in front, Thackray failed to convert once again to put them two points into the lead.

Jack Ormondroyd burst onto a Matty Wildie pass to score a try before Misi Taulapapa also added to the scoreboard after Will Milner’s kick caused plenty of problems for the Wildcats on the last kick to put the home side 18-6 up.

Minutes before half time a Wakefield scrum was given after the home side lost possession, Reece Lyne then races 20 metres on the left side to get the Wildcats back into the game, Tansey’s conversion drifted slightly wide to make it 18-10.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half was an even affair with chances for both sides, Jason Walton put a teasing kick in behind the Rovers defence but Johnson was there to knock it dead.

It was the Wildcats to get the try when Craig Hall’s kick caused confusion amongst the Rovers defence, it was Jordan Tansey who touched down again and converted to narrow the gap by two points, 18-16.

With five minutes remaining of the game, Craig Hall created another fantastic break for the Wildcats who found Max Jowitt, the youngster raced away to pounce the ball under the sticks; Tansey converted to give the visitors the win.
