Wildcats narrowly miss out on victory against touring side Newcastle Yowies.
It was a very physical and demanding 80 minutes for both sides and a tight contest with the first try coming from the visitors, Yowies after 20 minutes in the first half.
Newcastle Yowies were the first to get on the scoreboard with two back to back tries, the first coming 20 minutes in the first half from Ben Tupou, the brother of Wildcats’ Anthony Tupou. The try came after the visitors completed numerous sets on the Wildcat’s try line. The second came from Jayden Rosberg to put them 12-0 into the lead.
After a great break from Frazer Morris down the middle of the park, the ball was passes to Jordan Tansey who then found Anthony Tupou who passes it to Craig Hall on his left to put it over the line, a conversion from Tansey got the Wildcats back into the game on 6-12 with 11 minutes left on the clock in the first half.
Tansey then caused a bit of confusion amongst the Yowies defence, Joe Arundel picked up the possession after the visitors lost the ball which levelled it up 12-12. However it wasn’t long before the visitors pushed forward and found themselves back in the lead on 12-18.
The young Brad Moules got the second half underway scoring two quick tries for the home side, the second for the youngster and the third for the Wildcats came when Anthony Tupou collected a loose ball to find Moules on his left who raced 50 metres to get the ball the line. Tansey converted to put the Wildcats into the lead for the first time in the game, 24-18.
However, the Yowies came fighting back with a further three tries, Bennett Leslie barged through the Wakefield defence to touch down but an unsuccessful conversion kept the visitors two points behind the Wildcats on 24-22. But Paterika Vaivai found himself with the ball on the back of fantastic work by Darcy Eirich to nudge his side 24-28 into the lead before Stephen Gordon got their fifth try of the evening to further their lead on 24-32.
The Wildcats had a fair few chances in the final few minutes of the second half; Craig Hall scored his second of the evening to put the home side two points behind the visitors but it was not enough to get the victory.
