WILDCATS SUFFER DERBY DEFEAT

posted on 25 January 2016

A disappointing defeat for the Wildcats at the hands of local rivals Castleford Tigers in the penultimate friendly before the 2016 season gets underway.

Castleford proved to be far too strong for the Wildcats with seven tries to make it a comfortable win for the home side. The only try of the game for the Wildcats came from Reece Lyne with seven minutes remaining in the second half.

The home side came out on top with two tries in quick concession to open up the scoreline, the first came when Anthony England lost possession in an attempted offload to Miller, the ball found its way in to Denny Solomona’s hands who touched it down, a failed conversion by Gale put them 4-0 into the lead.

Holmes grabbed the second try for the Tigers when Luke Gale’s kick on the final tackle caused a few issues in the Wildcats defence, Holmes finished under the sticks for Gale to successfully convert to make it 10-0.

Denny Solomona soon got his second try and the Tigers third in 20 minutes to further their lead to 14-0, with a failed conversion attempt by Luke Gale.

The Wildcats found their feet with seven minutes remaining when Reece Lyne made a break down the left side to put the visitors back into the game; a successful conversion by Liam Finn put the scoreline to 14-6.

A fantastic defensive play from the Wildcats kept them in the game when Castleford looked to have added more points onto the board after a break from Millington found Holmes who was denied the try by Lyne on the stroke of half time.

The second half spiraled downhill for the Wildcats with a further four tries from the home side. Wakefield came out a much stronger side in the second half holding Castleford at bay.

Most of the play was in the centre of the park; Matty Ashurst was inches away from adding to the scoreboard but was unfortunately tackled just short of the line.

However, Castleford came fighting back with two tries, the first when the home side played the ball down the middle to find Luke Dorn to make it their fourth of the game, then Monaghan extends their lead when the Tigers go through three defenders down the right side, to make it 22-6 after Gale failed both conversions.

Two further tries from Denny Solomona which saw Castleford taking the 32-6 win in the friendly and Denny getting his hat-trick.
