Wakefield Wildcats got off to a disappointing start to the 2016 season after major errors saw Widnes Vikings take away the two points.
Despite a positive start for the Wildcats, Widnes new signing Setaimata Sa clinched two consecutive tries in the first half to put the Visitors into the lead which they held onto throughout the remainder of the game to seal the win.
Wakefield were the first to put points on the scoreboard after a penalty 10 metres from the try line put the home side in a dangerous position, Howarth then fooled the Widnes defence coming out of dummy half to get the ball over the line, a failed conversion from Finn put us 4-0 into the lead.
Widnes soon built up possession and found themselves on top, Reece Lyne made a fantastic try saving tackle on Ah Van but on the next play Brown put their new signing Sa in to put themselves into the lead, Hanbury converted to make it 4-6.
The visitors soon extended their lead with a further two tries just before half time, Rhys Hanbury got their second when Widnes pushed forward down the left side. Soon after Tom Johnstone failed to pass the ball to Ben Jones-Bishop on the 20 metre mark, Widnes scooped it up to go behind the sticks, Hanbury converted both to put the away side 4-18 into the lead.
Just after the second half got underway Bill Tupou came up trumps and gave the Wildcats another life line with a try saving tackle to deny Thompson from getting over in the corner.
Soon after, the Wildcats found themselves back in the game with a try from Reece Lyne down the right hand side, a pass from Joe Arundel found Lyne to his right who ran on the inside of the Widnes defence, Finn converted to put it 10-18.
It was not long before Widnes found their feet and extended their lead to 10-24 when Lloyd White sneaked over dummy half and fought off three Wildcats defence to get the ball over the line.
A fantastic set from the Wildcats in front of the sticks saw Liam Finn finding Ben Jones-Bishop who passed it to Michael Sio to get the try and put the home side back into the game, Fin converted to make it 16-24.
