First team players, ex rugby legends and fans of the game enjoyed a fantastic night at the races on Monday for a Rugby League Evening at Pontefract Races.
The weather and setting were both fantastic and the racecourse was packed with fans from Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants and Featherstone Rovers. All four clubs supported and advertised the event.
The event was the idea of Richard Hammill, Clerk of the Course at Pontefract, who said “We’re thrilled that everyone had a great night – we loved it and I’m already looking forward to next year. It’s great to be able to combine two of the most popular sports in West Yorkshire - we’ve had some fantastic feedback from all concerned.”
Commercial Manager at Wakefield Trinity, Verity Thomas, echoed Richard’s praise for the day “Richard has worked tirelessly to make the event what it was and it was a brilliant success. We look forward to partnering with Richard and the team from Pontefract for the event next year, we can’t wait! We would recommend a day out at Pontefract Races to everyone.”
The Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Handicap Stakes was won by a horse named Renfrew Street. Wakefield players Danny Kirmond, Nick Scruton, Jacob Miller and Joe Arundel joined Chairman Michael Carter to present the trophy to Deirdre Johnston, wife of trainer Mark Johnston.
