WASHBROOK RELIEVED TO GET WIN
Wakefield loose-forward Danny Washbrook was relieved to get the two points after a nervy performance saw the Wildcats beat Widnes 22-18 on Sunday evening.

Trinity edged out the visitors in a scrappy affair which has moved Richard Agar’s men above Bradford and into the crucial final play-off berth with just one game to go, this Saturday against Salford. Kyle Amor, Richard Mathers and Ali Lauitiiti went over before skipper Danny Kirmond won the game with a try in the closing minutes.
Washbrook said producing a victory when playing nowhere near their potential is an important skill.
“It wasn’t our best performance and it was probably one of the worst games we’ve played all year but we’ve worked out a way to win these last few weeks when we haven’t played that well compared to previous, so it’s good that we have worked out a way to win when we are not playing so well.
“There was a lot riding on this game for us and we knew we had to treat it as an early play-off game if we want to get something out of the season so I just think it was a bit of nerves.
“It is going to be the same again next week, nothing is decided so we have to concentrate on what we need to do against Salford to get the points,” said the forward.
The stage seemed all set for another Paul Sykes drop-goal after the scores were all square at 18-18 with under five minutes remaining and the former Hull FC man says the team always believed they had enough quality to gain the valuable win.
“We are confident because we have shown a way that we can win when we don’t play as well. It’s just a case of putting a performance in and hoping the result comes. Salford aren’t going to be pushovers, they are going to want to finish their season on a high with it being their last game as well. We have got to make sure we have our heads on and this week in training we do what we need to do.”
With a crowd of 8,234 packed into the Rapid Solicitors Stadium the red, white and blue faithful certainly made themselves heard with terrific support throughout the tense evening and ‘Washy’ is hoping as many supporters make the trip to Greater Manchester on Saturday to support the boys.
“It felt like there was a lot more than that in here tonight because they were that noisy and I think that’s what has helped us along this year is the backing from the crowd. The more we can get there, the better.”
