Richard Mathers arrived at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium for the start of the 2012 season on-loan from Castleford Tigers. The full-back quickly established himself as one of the most consistent players for The Wildcats after joining on a one year deal and, was rewarded by being given the vice-captaincy on June 7th after Danny Kirmond replaced Steve Southern in leading the team out.
Trinity’s number 1 has a wealth of experience behind him including winning the Grand Final in 2004 for Leeds Rhinos. The following season he was part of the victorious World Club Challenge team before making his debut for England.
His impressive form in Super League earned the 28-year-old a chance to play in the NRL where he played for Gold Coast Titans before a knee injury cut short his time in Australia. Mathers then returned to the UK and after a spell at Wigan he moved to Warrington where he won back-to-back Challenge Cups. He scored a try at Wembley in 2009 before putting in a terrific performance against his former club Leeds to retain the famous trophy before departing to the Tigers.
Mathers made his move permanent at the end of his loan spell and put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Trinity as he remains one of the senior players amongst a young Wildcats squad, a role he is flourishing in.
